A bit about me

LOW RES-KAREN IMG_5401.jpg

Hello!  Welcome to my website.  Come on in for a cup of tea and we'll get better acquainted.

Let me tell you about my slightly unorthodox route to acting:  I first got a Law Degree at UL in Ireland, and then an MA in Film Direction and Production from the Huston Film School in Galway, Ireland.  I was excited to leave my small town in Ireland, and when acting school in Cambridge fell through for financial reasons, I found myself in law school, spending most of my time taking acting classes and putting up productions for the drama society.  I won scholarships to theatre summer schools, and I co-founded a theatre company in Limerick.  I wanted to learn more about all aspects of film-making, and was able to continue acting while at film school.  I was cast in a feature film, Sanctuary (Len Collin), and then I moved to B.C. Canada to stretch myself further.

I found ways to do what I love, and I am grateful for my unusual trajectory because I have a lot of life experience to bring to acting. Plus I know a good contract when I see one.

I  created a micro-budget comedy web series, Hard Knocks Hostel, based on my experiences working in a backpacker hostel to put myself through school.  Ferrying some of the best and brightest collaborators I could find to a remote island off the coast of Ireland to shoot 5 episodes in 4 days was hugely rewarding.

Since arriving in Canada,  I've been lucky enough to learn from some of the best show-runners and directors out there,  in writers' rooms,  and assisting directors and producers.  I continue doing Scene Study and One on One Coaching, as well as accent and voice work. I am now a permanent resident of Canada, soon to be citizen!

I appreciate you being here, and I hope your tea didn't go cold.
